You've seen it compressed on cheat sheets and spread out across classroom walls. But even if you recognize the periodic table, do you recognize all the information you can glean from it?
An invaluable tool for chemists, the periodic table stores a comprehensive amount of data. Each element occupies its own space on the table, along with data that pertains to that element. Not only does the periodic table provide information about each element, but also the way the elements are organized on the table describes their properties and chemical behavior.
Atomic Symbol
The letter or letters in an element's space in the periodic table represent the name of the element and are known as its atomic symbol. The first letter, and only the first letter, is capitalized. The atomic symbols of some commonly known elements are:
H: Hydrogen
He: Helium
O: Oxygen
Ag: Silver
Au: Gold
Pb: Lead
Atomic Number
Elements in the periodic table are arranged in increasing atomic number. The atomic number (a whole number) represents the number of protons in one atom of the element, which equals the number of electrons in one atom of the element.
For example, the element chlorine, represented by the atomic symbol Cl, has the atomic number 17. That means one atom of Cl is made up of 17 protons and 17 electrons. Neutrons also appear in an atom, but the atomic number doesn't tell us how many.
Atomic Weight
The atomic weight of an element is often listed below its atomic symbol as a decimal number. It represents the number of grams in one mole of the element. One mole of an element is 6.02 * 10^23 atoms of that element.
For example, the atomic weight of sodium is approximately 22.9898 g/mol. That means one atom of sodium (Na) is (1 / (6.02 * 10^23 atoms/mol)) * 22.9898 g/mol = 3.819 * 10^(-23) g.
Periods
Each row in the periodic table is known as a period. Properties vary across a period:
In the same period, an element will have a larger atomic radius the farther left in the table it is.
Ionization energy, the amount of energy needed to take an electron away from an atom, gets bigger the farther right an element is in the table.
Metallic character increases the farther left an element is.
Groups
Columns in the periodic table are called groups. Groups generally share similar properties.
For example, the first group in the periodic table is made up of the alkali metals; the second, the alkaline earth metals; the second-to-last, the halogens; and the last, the noble gases. Elements in the middle of the table are transition metals.
When forming chemical compounds, elements at each end of the periodic table have a tendency to gain or lose the same number of electrons as the other elements in their same group. The alkali metals have a tendency to lose one electron; the halogens gain one.
