How to Make a Table of Contents

If you have put together a book and want people to be able to access the topics in the books quickly, then making a table of contents will enable your readers to find the information they are looking for much faster. Here is how to make a table of contents.

Instructions

    1

    Decide how many divisions you want to include in the table of contents. Some tables of contents only include top level information, such as the chapter titles. Other tables of contents include more information, such as the headings within each chapter.

    Type each chapter title. Put one title on each line. Make sure that the chapter titles in the table of contents match the chapter titles within the book.

    Set the chapter titles in boldface. If you plan to include sub-chapter titles, then bold the chapter titles. This will make the chapter titles stand out, which enables the reader to find them more easily.

    Add sub-chapter information. If you want to include information such as headings in your table of contents, then indent the lines below each chapter title and then type in each sub-chapter title. Make sure that the sub-headings in the table of contents match the sub-headings within each chapter.

    Include dotted lines. Add dotted lines to the tabs that you use to lead into the page numbers. The dotted lines make it easier for the reader to line up the titles with the page numbers.

    Incorporate the page numbers. After you have completed the final draft of the entire book, you are ready to add the page numbers for each title.
