A beautifully-set table can turn the simplest food into a memorable affair. Whether you're using your everyday plates or white linens and your wedding china, learn the proper way to lay out a table for a formal or informal meal. Instructions

Spread a clean, pressed tablecloth over your table. For a formal setting, use white linen. A less formal tablecloth, or the use of place mats, is appropriate for an informal setting or family dinner table. A tablecloth should be large enough to drape 6 inches over the edges of the table.

Place a plate in the center of each place mat or in front of each chair on the table cloth. A bread plate may be placed above the dinner plate and to the left. Salad plates should be centered on the dinner plate and removed at the end of the salad course during formal dinners.

Water and wine glasses are placed above the dinner plate and to the right. Water goblet or glass is nearest the plate, with a wine glass next to it.

Place forks to the left of the plate and spoons and knives to the right of the plate. Forks should be placed, from the left toward the plate, in the order of use with appetizer forks first, then salad forks, followed by a dinner fork. On the right, the knife should be closest to the plate with the blade facing the plate, followed by a soup spoon. Place a desert spoon and fork on the table above the dinner plate with the spoon handle facing right and the fork handle facing left.

Set a folded napkin either to the left of the forks or on the left corner of the dinner plates. For a more informal setting, napkins may be placed under the utensils.
