How to Set Up a Table of Contents Page

Writing a high quality Table of Contents page is like giving your readers a road map to the document or book they are about to read. This is a page that should be created after the rest of your document has been completed. The reason you wait until the end to complete your Table of Contents page is because you will need to know what page each section starts on, and also will have to determine a title that represents the content in each section.

Instructions

    1

Create a title for your Table of Contents page. Some common choices include "Contents" or "Table of Contents." Center this title at the top of the page of paper that you are creating your Table of Contents Page on.

    2

Determine logical breaks in the document. Create titles for each section of your document. These titles should be descriptive of what each section contains. This helps the reader know what he will be reading about in each section of your document. Write the names of these sections in sequential order down the left hand side of the Table of Contents page.

    3

Number each page in your document. When numbering the pages, note the page number where each of the sections you have in your document begins on.

    4

Write down the page number each section starts on at the right hand edge of your Table of Contents on the same line as the title of that section. This will tell your readers which page to turn to to find the section of your document for which they might be looking.

    5

Determine any special fonts or colors you would like to use for your Table of Contents page. The title should have the largest font on the page. Each of the section titles might have a different font color or style. This will help to make each section stand out on the Table of Contents page.

    6

Place your Table of Contents page in order in your document. Your Table of Contents page should follow the tile page in your document, if there is a summary page in your document that can precede the Table of Contents page as well.
