A well-styled, themed table helps set the mood for an occasion. Create place settings based on etiquette for different events or meals; and put the cutlery, crockery and glassware in the correct positions. Add items and decorations that are appropriate to the theme and occasion. Does this Spark an idea?

Choose colors based on your theme. For example, use bright colors for a summer barbecue, neutrals for a sophisticated dinner party and red for a Valentine's Day meal. A butterfly theme suits a summer wedding, and gold and silver are traditional for Christmas day.
2Lay a tablecloth on the table, and adjust it so the table is evenly covered. Use a white linen tablecloth for a formal event or colorful paper tablecloths for a more relaxed occasion.
3Set out place mats to mark each place setting. Metallic colours will create a formal complement to a white tablecloth, or contrast bright colors for a tropical or party theme.
4Lay out one dinner plate with one small side plate to the left on each place mat. If serving a soup course, place the soup bowl on top of the dinner plate.
5Lay out the cutlery by placing a large and a small fork to the lefthand side of the dinner plate with the small fork to the outside. Place a large and a small knife to the righthand side of the dinner plate, with the small knife to the outside. Place a dessert spoon along the top of each place setting and a butter knife on the side plate. If serving soup as a starter, replace the small knives and forks with a soup spoon in place of the small knife. For casual affairs, put out only one fork, one knife and a spoon.
6Lay out glassware. For a formal dinner party, use a large wine glass for red wine, a small wine glass for white, and a water glass. If there is to be a toast, include a champagne flute. For an outdoor event, set out colored plasticware to the top right of each place setting.
7Add napkins to each place setting by either folding into rectangles or placing them in a napkin ring. Place the napkin to the left-hand side, on top of the side plate.
8Add a name places to each setting. Buy ready-made tags, or fold over a piece of card stock and write the names of your guests in neat writing. Use heart stickers or stamps for a romantic theme, colored inks and cartoon stickers for a children's party or calligraphy for a dinner party.
9Add the wow factor with a centerpiece. Arrange a row of different sized church candles along the middle of the table, or use taper candlesticks for a Valentine's dinner. Display seasonal flowers in posies up the length of the table for a garden party, and at Halloween, place pumpkins in the center of the table. For Christmas lunch, lay pine branches down the center of the table.
